Why it exists
Every walking app counts the steps of the person holding the phone and, if you are lucky, lets you put a dog's name on them. A Chihuahua and a Labrador walk the same mile with step counts that differ by a factor of four, and no app showed that. Pawdometer measures the distance by GPS and works out, from each dog's real height and weight, what the walk was for them.
The honesty promise
Distance, route, moving time and pace are measured. Paw steps, calories and the share of the daily need are estimates from published veterinary formulas, and the app labels them as estimates everywhere they appear. Pawdometer never gives diet advice, never invents a number, and never pretends a phone in your pocket can count paws.
The formulas
Stride length is 1.1 to 1.5 times shoulder height at a walk, narrowed by the walk's speed, with a correction for short-legged breeds, and four paw falls per stride. Walking calories are 0.8 to 1.0 kcal per kilogram per kilometre. Daily energy need is the NRC resting requirement (70 × kg^0.75) scaled by the WSAVA life-stage multipliers. The same functions run in the free calculators on this site, so the app and the site never disagree.
Where the data lives
On the iPhone, and nowhere else. There are no accounts, no servers, no analytics SDK and no ad networks in the app. Purchases are billed by Apple and verified with RevenueCat. Delete a walk, a dog or the app and the data is gone.
The app
Listed on the App Store as "Dog Walk GPS & Weight Tracker". iPhone, iOS 17 or later. Free 3-day trial, then $4.99 per week or $29.99 per year in the US, cancelled in iPhone Settings.
These guides
The guides on this site are written from veterinary and scientific sources, cited at the end of each one, and they say when something is an estimate or a rule of thumb. They are general information, not veterinary advice.
