Half the dogs in the US are overweight. Walks are the lever you control.
The research is clear and a little brutal. Pawdometer doesn't give diet advice; it makes the walking part measurable, so the trend is honest.

Every walk on a map, with the phone in your pocket
Tap Start, pocket the phone, walk. Pawdometer records the route, GPS distance, moving time and pace, and auto-detects sniff breaks (a stop of 30 seconds or more) so a good sniff never drags your pace down. A pocket lock keeps stray taps out.

Paw steps estimated from your dog's real size
A Chihuahua and a German Shepherd walk the same mile with wildly different step counts. Pawdometer estimates paw steps from your dog's shoulder height and the walk's real speed, four paw falls per stride, and it always says "estimate".

Calories against your dog's daily need
Walking burn from published veterinary formulas (about 0.8 to 1.0 kcal per kilogram per kilometre), shown as a share of your dog's daily energy need using the WSAVA and NRC equations. Useful context. Never diet advice.

Questions people ask before they download
Is there an app that counts my dog's steps?
Yes. Pawdometer estimates your dog's paw steps on every walk from the GPS-measured distance, your dog's shoulder height and the walk's real speed. It is an estimate, labeled as one, because a phone in your pocket cannot feel your dog's paws. The estimate is the honest alternative to counting your own steps and calling them your dog's.
How can it count paw steps without a collar tracker?
A dog's stride at a walk is about 1.1 to 1.5 times its shoulder height, and every stride is four paw falls. Divide the measured distance by the stride and multiply by four. Pawdometer narrows the range using the walk's real speed and shows the midpoint, always with "(est.)" next to it.
How accurate is the distance?
Distance comes from the iPhone's GPS, the same sensor running apps use. In open streets and parks it is typically within a few percent. Sniff stops are detected and excluded from the pace, so a slow, sniffy walk still shows an honest moving pace.
Does it work with the phone in my pocket?
Yes. Start the walk, lock the phone or put it away, and Pawdometer keeps recording. A pocket lock blocks accidental taps on the walk screen until you hold to unlock.
What is a sniff break?
When your dog stops for 30 seconds or more (speed under 0.4 metres per second), Pawdometer marks it as a sniff break and pauses the moving clock. Distance and pace stay honest, and the sniff count becomes part of the walk's story.
How are calories calculated?
Walking burn is about 0.8 to 1.0 kcal per kilogram of body weight per kilometre walked, the range used by veterinary calorie estimators. It is shown against your dog's daily need, computed with the WSAVA and NRC formulas from ideal weight, age, neuter status and activity. Every number is labeled an estimate.
Does Pawdometer give diet advice?
No, and it never will. It shows what a walk burned and roughly what your dog needs in a day so you have context. Feeding decisions belong to you and your vet.
Can I track two dogs on one walk?
Yes. Pick every dog who is walking and each gets their own paw steps, calories, streak and awards from the same GPS distance. Small dogs take more steps for the same mile, and the app shows that.
How do streaks and rest days work?
Any walk, of any length, keeps the flame alive. Each calendar week includes two free rest days, so a missed day does not break the streak unless it is the third miss that week. Today never breaks the streak until it is over, and an 8 PM reminder fires only when the streak is actually at risk.
What does it cost, and how do I cancel?
Pawdometer Pro is $4.99 per week or $29.99 per year in the US, both with a 3-day free trial. Apple bills it through your Apple ID. Cancel in iPhone Settings, Subscriptions, in a few taps; the trial ends with no charge if you cancel before day three.
Where is my data stored?
On your iPhone, and nowhere else. There are no accounts, no servers, no analytics SDK and no ad networks. Delete a walk, a dog or the app and the data is gone, because the phone was the only place it lived.
Which phones does it support?
Pawdometer runs on iPhone with iOS 17 or later. There is no Android version and no Apple Watch app at the moment.
